Empowerment through information

My philosophy has always been that timely, clear and reliable and trusted information empowers people to make informed decisions and have greater agencye, and that’s especially important to people who use services such as public transit.

The art of good communication and design is that people can use a service, navigate a space, get something done—make their way through something unexpected—with maximum confidence and minimal doubt.

And when you really do something right, people may not notice you did anything at all: A good experience is one that just works.

With more than 20 years of professional experience in a range of user experience, user interface, user education, graphics and information design with attention toward usability, accessibility and approachability for broad audiences.

  • 25 years of experience in designing and developing private and public transit websites, mobile services and, more.

Notably, a key force behind the development of the Chicago Transit Authority’s “Train Tracker” service with highly accurate live data, various digital interfaces and improving the user experience of the Ventra fare system following its initial rollout and a key player in the design of its groundbreaking app.

Pivotal in making the CTA a leader in open data before common among transit agencies, leading to cutting-edge apps for riders with transit info and integration not available in most cities (with the added benefit of opening doors for greater transparency and data-driven journalism).

  • Vast experience in information and experience design in public spaces and environments, with oversight and direct design, production and application work.

Experience in permanent and temporary signage, published information, navigation, wayfinding, and fare payment tech for a world-class transit system with deliberate, consistent and disciplined design language and brand voice.

Work in these areas extends beyond CTA, as well, through various collaborations with partners such as an added, comprehensive layer of wayfinding breadcrumbs from baggage claims to Blue Line trains at O’Hare.

Extensive experience in working to produce materials that are highly usable without regard to ability or local language proficiency, developing intuitive paths and breadcrumb trails through normal and abnormal situations and intuitive digital user experiences.

  • First charged with rethinking the CTA’s web presence to be rider-centric rather than agency-initiative and marketing-centric, began career with agency transforming its online presence from passive to active in promoting transit, focusing on riders’ needs and establishing transparency and accountability in publishing service information once left only to physically on-site communication in the event of a disruption.

A key player in design and development of multiple generations of fare vending machines and payment point interfaces and part of an interagency team (CTA, Metra and Pace) that launched the groundbreaking and award-winning Ventra fare app with features not yet available in other cities like instant farecard reloads by phone—and, later, part of the team that brought virtual farecards in iOS and Android to Chicago ahead of other cities across the continent.

  • Wide ranging experience in graphics design in both digital and physical realms, ranging from marketing materials, illustrations, signage & wayfinding design, website and app UI design, interactive and passive digital interfaces and more.

  • Overseeing graphics design for a large public agency, I’ve spent a great deal of time building on our historic and widely-recognized brand at CTA, working both to establish greater consistency, modernize and humanize our design language while embracing and staying true to its roots, honoring its history and its well-earned place in the design language of a great city.

This includes both internal and external efforts to refresh the design of public-facing materials such as maps, brochures and signage, as well as internal efforts to improve cross-agency awareness of how to use and apply brand styles for a more unified, cohesive agency voice.

  • A wealth of experience in varied writing styles, from personal to formal, and spanning user education, instructional information, marketing and promotional copy and technical writing in various roles from being a content writer at MSN to being over web content at an Internet service to being the primary content creator for the Chicago Transit Authority’s website and social media creator for a decade in an earlier role.

  • Established an information- and service-centered social media strategy for CTA and for years fostered their growth, created compelling content to tell our story and show our work through photo and explainers while also providing answers to rider questions and working closely with marketing and media teams to share announcements, initiatives and promotional content.

  • Considerations for accessibility and usability are core to successful design, experience and interface creation to create equitable experiences for a range of audiences and must be core to any such endeavor—never an afterthought, considering how to make sure what we do serves as many people and as many needs as possible for varying considerations to ability, language proficiency and other factors create better, more intuitive and more equitable experiences for all.

About me

I’m a passionate design-obsessed, oft-cycling, history exploring, eternally curious urbanist, technologist, and just an absolute public transit nerd—rooted and raised in Chicago.

My path has led me to fall in love with—and devote a career to enhancing access to and through—culturally rich, diverse, walkable, sustainable transit-accessible places and, when not working on finding ways to make my community a better one, you might find me biking and exploring the ghosts of the city’s history (and perhaps sharing that with others), gardening or spending a Saturday cooking elaborate meals for me and my incredible partner, Daniel… or for a big group of friends.

When I travel, you’ll likely find me diving deep in exploring neighborhoods, subways and infrastructure in other cities around the world (and bringing home a zillion photos of great ideas and inspiration to bring back home).
